Ontario runs one provincial championship a year. Silver Owl won it three years running, then went to Dallas and won a division at Worlds.

03 / WHAT THE AWARDS MEAN

Half of these aren’t won by driving.

VEX judges more than the robot. The award list above is also a list of the things a student has to get good at — writing, presenting, designing, coding, building — to take one home.

Excellence Award

The highest honour in VEX. Awarded to the strongest overall program at an event, judged on robot performance, the engineering notebook, and a panel interview.

Tournament Champions

The winning alliance of the elimination bracket. Two teams, working together, out of a field that can run past 60.

Design Award

For the best engineering notebook and design process — months of documented sketches, tests, failures and revisions.

Think Award

For the best autonomous programming: the fifteen seconds where the robot scores on its own, with nobody touching a controller.

Innovate Award

For a genuinely original engineering solution — a mechanism the judges have not seen anyone else attempt.

Amaze Award

For a robot that performs at a consistently high level in every phase of the game.

Build Award

For craftsmanship: the cleanest, most robust, best-constructed machine at the event.

Robot Skills Champion

Highest solo score at the event — driver control and autonomous runs combined, no alliance partner to lean on.
