01 / WHAT IS V5RC?

STEM brought to life through competition.

Students join a team, design and build a robot from VEX V5 hardware, code its autonomous routines, and compete in 2-on-2 alliance matches against teams from across Canada and the world.

Each season has a new game with new rules. Strategy matters as much as build quality. Coding rivals mechanical design. Notebook documentation earns its own awards. It’s engineering school — but it’s also a sport.

02 / THE PROGRAM

There is a single V5RC program at Silver Owl — the same coaches, the same lab, the same standards. Where you start just depends on what you walk in with.

New and returning competitors

New to robotics? A 20-week structured curriculum takes you from zero to your first robot, then onto a team for the season. Already competed? Skip the curriculum and get placed on a team from day one.

03 / TEAM ROLES

Every team. Six engineers. Six specialties.

V5RC isn’t a one-person sport. Teams find success when each role is owned by someone who loves it.

01

Team Captain

Leads the team. Runs meetings, sets the schedule, coordinates across builders, coders, and drivers.

Builder

Designs and constructs the robot. Iterates on mechanisms — intakes, lifts, drivetrains, scoring systems.

Programmer

Writes the C++ for autonomous routes, driver-control logic, and programming skills runs.

Driver

Operates the robot in competition. Practices regularly to improve control, speed, and pressure handling.

Co-Driver

Supports the driver during matches with real-time strategy calls and field awareness.

Notebook Lead

Documents the entire design process — ideas, prototypes, testing, results. Goes for the Excellence Award.

Not at all. Our 20-week curriculum is designed specifically for absolute beginners. Most of our champions started knowing nothing about robotics.

Structured class is 3 hours per week (1-hour lesson + 2-hour build). Competing members typically spend 6–15 hours per week in the lab, especially closer to tournaments. You decide your own pace.

After training, we place members on teams based on skill, work style, and goals. Returning competitors are matched into experienced teams from day one.

Everything. We stock the VEX V5 Competition platform fully — motors, sensors, structural parts, batteries, controllers. You don’t buy your own hardware.

Regional tournament registration is included. Signature events and Worlds typically involve additional travel costs which we discuss with families ahead of the season.

Come in for a free trial. We’ll show them around, let them work alongside a current team, and you’ll know within an hour.

Yes — we write reference letters for any member who requests one and has been in the program for at least one full season.

The lab is at 50 East Wilmot St, Unit 103 in Richmond Hill, just off Highway 7. Our teams are made up of students from Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan, Thornhill, Unionville, Aurora, Newmarket and North York — most families are within a 20-minute drive, and we compete at tournaments across York Region and the GTA.
